ABI Partners with Fujifilm for Crack Mapping
March 2019
In a recent partnership with Fujifilm, ABI has brought automated crack mapping for bridge decks to the USA. ABI is already leading the NDE industry by sounding bridges for delaminations at speeds up to 45 mph. Now, with no loss in speed, ABI can image the deck and detect cracks down to 0.3 mm wide using Fujifilm’s proprietary crack detection algorithm. “Fujifilm is excited to add crack mapping to ABI’s suite of bridge inspection tools and to help DOTs obtain objective evaluations of their bridge decks,” explained Diana Hellman of Fujifilm. This enables ABI to produce highly detailed crack maps and monitor cracks as they develop. Fujifilm’s crack detection software further increases the information and value that ABI can offer DOTs given just a few seconds on a bridge deck.

Bridge inspectors will usually measure a handful of cracks and mark general crack patterns instead of trying to produce a detailed crack map manually. The images above show that Fujifilm’s crack detection algorithm is able to find and mark each individual crack. ABI combines this crack information and produces a full crack map in just a few minutes, a process that could take hundreds of man-hours if done manually. The map below shows how these crack maps are integrated with ABI’s delamination, patch, and spall maps, giving DOTs a comprehensive understanding of the deck’s condition.

The technological advancements by ABI and Fujifilm are giving DOTs the tools to perform deck inspections at the network-level. Diana Hellman commented, “ Performing detailed crack mapping used to be a big headache. Fujifilm’s crack detection software streamlines this process and makes thorough and precise crack maps possible with minimal effort.” This reduces the cost for crack maps making crack inspections on all bridge decks possible.
